UPM Plasma Physics Laboratory

Since 1992 the Cold Plasmas Laboratory is a part of the Department of Applied Physics of the ETSIA . This acronym (Escuela Técnica superior de Ingenieros Aeronáuticos) corresponds to the Aeronautical Engineering School of the Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). This non profit University depends on the Spanish Ministry of Education and the local goverment of Madrid (Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid).

The laboratory facilities were funded by successive R&D Grants and are intended for basic as well as applied research in plasma physics. Our scientific interests deal with theoretical and experimental plasma physics with particular regard with aerospace applications. We are concerned with the physics of electric discharges, plasma structures (double layers) and ionization instabilities in weakly ionized classical and dusty plasmas. Since 2004 we collaborate with the group led by Prof. I.M. Tkachenko of the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Technical of Valencia (UPV) Regarding the aerospace applications, we develop gridded, low power ring cusp plasma thrusters and we also study the physics of microwave electric discharges in space communication systems in collaboration with the ValSpace consortium.
